Initial Speedsculpt

Initial Speedsculpt

A generic Raptor/Dromaeosaur named after the titular character from the novel "Raptor Red", and inspired by the paleoart design conventions of the mid 90's - early 2000's.

Everyone loves a good raptor, and I've a real soft spot for the paleoart of the 90's and early 2000's and so I wanted to do my take on a raptor inspired by the artistry of this time. I took heavy inspiration from the original Jurassic Park trilogy, the artwork of Frederic Wierum (specifically his Jurassic World Evolution redesign for Deinonychus), as well as Vlad Konstantinov's work for The Jurassic Games - 2018.
-
This project started as a speed sculpt back in 2023, challenging myself to get as far as I could with a sculpt over the course of a day, and while I was pleased with it at the time I've wanted to return to it and finalize it in the interim. I did another pass in ZBrush, pushing the secondary details further and adjusting the proportions to make the design feel more wiry, more present, and overall much meaner. Taking it back into Substance Painter I focused primarily on getting the feel of the skin to the point where I wanted it before applying the colors and patterns in an admittedly very free-form manner. I didn't have the best idea of coloration or patterns but I still was very pleased with the final result. Final step was composition and rendering in Marmoset, which I've been enjoying more and more each time I use it capping off a project.
